Embassy Visits

Being situated in the nation’s capitol our society tries to take advantage of the large diplomatic community that is housed right on our doorstep. The society’s visits to embassy range from an afternoon tea meet and greet with the deputy head of missions of Malaysia to a lecture with the trade commissioner at the High Commission to a BBQ on the lawns of the American Embassy. The visits often have limited numbers and are allocated on a first come first serve basis.

Careers Fair

Our annual Career’s Fair, which has in the past been organised in conjunction with other societies on campus, is one of our flagship events for the year. In 2013 we had seventeen employers and over four hundred students come to the fair. The employers who have attended in the past include the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the Australian Secret Intelligent Service and the Attorney General’s Department. There will be more information on the 2014 fair later in the year.

Social Events

Our annual trivia night has become a feature of the societies social calendar where all our membership can test their knowledge on all things international relations. We often give bonus points to those who have a detailed knowledge of the West Wing. Other social events we are hoping to feature this year include a night in the pub and foreign film nights with discount tickets.

Educational Lecture Series

Being at the ANU, we are lucky to have some of the world’s leaders in their respective academic fields in International Relations, Politics and Security Studies. As a society we believe in extending student’s knowledge beyond the classroom through our annual educational lecture series. These events are held throughout the year and are open to the public. Check our Facebook page for more information on the upcoming lecture.

Podcasts

A new feature starting in 2014 will be podcasts on our Youtube channel of our lectures. This year we will be trailing recording our lectures, which will later be placed up on Youtube so that more people have access and can take advantage of the insights and discussion even without attending.
